2007 legislation

'NICS Improvement Amendments Act of 2007' (H.R. 2640)

STRENGTH :Legislation to strengthen the Brady background check system by increasing the reporting of state records to the NICS database.




WEAKNESS: Also establishes a 'relief from disability' program to allow persons now prohibited from possessing a firearm because they have 'been adjudicated as a mental defective' or 'committed to a mental institution' to apply to have their bar on firearms possession removed.

TIAHRT AMENDMENT



Continues to be added to Appropriations bills.



Hinders crime and trace data information available to law enforcement to indentify trafficking of firearms.

"Shoot First" - "Make my Day" - "Castle Bill"


If a criminal defendant was suffering or about to suffer a felony offense of violence or a forcible trespass on their home :

  • Provides a criminal defendant claiming self-defense with immunity from civil liability for damages
  • Presumes that the accused acted properly in self-defense or in defense of a person defended by the accused
